Overall cancer incidence is increasing worldwide, and these figures are greatly influenced by the bleak breast cancer statistics. This was stated by the experts from the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Switzerland, who were fulfilling the WHO request.
Last year, there were 14 million of victims of cancer around the world, which is significantly more than in 2008, when the tumor disease was diagnosed in 12.7 million people. The Swiss specialists, who collected these statistics for WHO, believe that the incidence rate has increased due to the large number of women, who suffered and died from breast cancer.
In 2012, 1.7 million new diagnoses of breast tumors were registered, which is 20% more than in 2008. The experts attribute the increase in the incidence of breast cancer to the change in people’s lifestyle in industrialized countries, where reproductive, nutritional and hormonal risk factors are of great importance. Advancement of technology helped develop new and better methods of early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, until a large number of women from developing countries (such as Russia, China, and India) were included in the statistics.
Developing countries demonstrate a higher mortality rate from breast cancer, but the residents of developed countries fall ill more often. In total, the researchers collected the information on 28 different types of cancer in 184 countries. The most common types of cancer among men and women are tumors of the lungs, breast, and digestive tract. Most often, the victims of the disease died of lung, liver, and stomach cancer.
